Real Life Girl Geeks Discuss Second Life

Another round of thanks to everyone who came out to last night's Girl Geek Dinner at Brassaii! An intimate crowd of 22 enjoyed sumptuous food, friendly service, and an engaging discussion on virtual worlds and Second Life led by the indomitable Kate Trgovac of mynameiskate, onedegree, and reinvent! Communications.

Kate first presented us with a basic primer on virtual worlds both 3D and 2D -- and there are waaaay more of them than I thought! -- then moderated a lively dialogue covering all the pros and cons of virtual worlds and their impact on the future of technology, marketing, and issues of personal identity and social connection. My biggest takeaway? Virtual worlds are here to stay, and may very well be the future of the internet; and while the concept can sound intimidating and scary, the people involved are not. I'm inspired to join more virtual worlds, if only to see things for myself!

    Hi there,

I couldn't find contact information for anyone associated with this, so I'll leave it in the comments. I work for a non-profit international feminist organization, and we have a few job opportunities currently available for women with some tech skills. We have had some difficulty recruiting for these kinds of positions in the past, so I was wondering if you had any suggestions of where we should be looking? Any job boards or recent graduate programs that might be of assistance?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer! You can reach me at ajack@awid.org
